DANASA editions

The books DANASA publishes.

Public-domain works, typeset with the same program any author can download. They are in the catalog so there is something to read from day one, and to show what the engine can do.

What they are.

A DANASA edition is a work whose text already belongs to everyone — it has entered the public domain — and which DANASA publishes. It replaces no author: it fills the space the catalog would otherwise leave empty. The house publishes them as EPUB and keeps print for the ones that are hard to find in other bookstores.

The book page says it plainly: “A DANASA edition”. Whoever buys has the right to know who they are buying from.

How they are made.

The same path any author walks at DANASA, with no shortcuts:

  1. We start from the text of the work as its author left it. No tool summarizes or rewrites it.
  2. It is typeset in DANASA Studio: Knuth-Plass line breaking, orphans, widows and rivers flagged, and hyphenation in the language of the work.
  3. The EPUB comes out of Studio when the book is published. For print, the cover is drawn with the spine computed from the page count, and the PDF comes out with fonts embedded and margins validated for the chosen trim size.
  4. The EPUB downloads as soon as it is bought, DRM-free. Print is produced when someone orders it: there is no print run and no warehouse, and each copy is made for the order that asks for it.

The house rules.

A publisher selling in its own catalog competes with its authors unless it sets itself limits. These are ours, and they are not a statement of intent: they are written into the site's code.

  • A visible mark.

Every DANASA edition says so on its page. None is presented as the work of an independent author.

  • Out of rankings and featured spots.

DANASA editions do not enter the rankings or the featured spots on the home page. Those places are for authors.

  • The author counts, not the house.

In your Readers' Guild, a DANASA edition counts as a work read, and its author as one more author you have read: what counts is who wrote the book, not the house that publishes it. Two editions by the same author count once.

Made with DANASA Studio.

DANASA editions are typeset with DANASA Studio, the same free program for Mac and Windows that any author can download.

The editions, in the catalog.

No house edition has been published yet.
